So you’ve met a great guy. He has a perfect personality, great career, and a delightful demeanor…but he also has kids. Each woman responds to this scenario in different ways—some run for the hills while others are lured to the potential of a built-in family. Which are you? Do men with kids scare you, or do they attract you even more? Before you date a man with kids, be sure that you understand his situation and how it will impact you and possibly your future children. While you don’t want miss out on a great guy, you also don’t want to enter a relationship that has more than you bargained for. Here are 3 top things to think about before dating a dad:

1. Parenting: Are you ready for kids? If you’re not, you should think twice about dating a man with children because when you do (and things get serious) you will become one! Are you ready to be an example, a role model, and an authority figure?

2.  Finances: Is your possible man a millionaire…or are you? If not, consider that the price tag for raising just one child in the US today is around $ 1.3 million from the cradle to college – and that’s with public education. How many children does he already have, and how many more do you want?

3.    Family: Have you met his kids’ mother and her side of the family? You’re going to have to see them for the rest of your union, so you want to make sure that you like them; or at least that you are able to treat them with respect for the sake of your sanity and family.

Dating a man with children can be fun and rewarding if you are aware of the responsibilities that go along with the relationship. If you are willing to make this type of commitment, you may find yourself in a healthy and happy relationship with a wonderful man. But if you are not ready to take on all the requirements of a step-parent, you need to be aware of that and act appropriately. It’s important to think strategically and consider everything before you commit yourself emotionally and physically to a relationship with a man with children. Take the time to consider these 3 aspects of dating a dad before getting involved, then choose what works for you!
